Using the Attendance Tool
What is the Attendance Tool?
Roll Call is an integrated LTI tool in Canvas for taking attendance in face-to-face classes. The tool is called Attendance and will display in the left navigation of a course. View the tabbed menu below to learn more.
Attendance Overview
When the instructor clicks attendance the first time a message will appear stating Roll Call is requesting access to Canvas. This is normal. On the Roll Call page a list of students in the course will appear. Review the numbered items below.
- Marking Students – (a) Click Mark All Present to mark all students present or click Unmark All to unmark students. (b) Click More to set attendance individually for each student.
- More - When more is clicked choose one of the options. (a) Click the green checkmark for present. (b) Click the X for a student who is absent. (c) Click the filled in checkmark for a student who is late. (d) By default students are set at not marked.
- Cross-Listed Courses - If course sections are cross-listed (merged), there will be two tabs for each section.
- List/Class – By default the list will display. Use the Class view to create seating charts if desired. Attendance can be taken from both views.
- Current Day/Set a Date – Use the arrows to navigate to a different day or click the calendar icon to select a date.
- Gear Settings – Click to set the desired late percentage allowed or to create an attendance report. After the January 18, 2020 Canvas update Links to an external site., instructors can also exclude the attendance assignment from the gradebook total from the attendance interface. This can also be done in the assignment settings.
Grading Options
When the attendance tool is activated, a graded assignment is automatically created. DO NOT rename or delete this assignment. If you wish to edit the assignment settings, please note when the assignment is viewed from the assignment page it will appear a bit different than typical assignments. Click Edit Assignment Settings on the right sidebar.
By default the attendance assignment is worth 100 %; however, the instructor can change the assignment settings if desired. If you do not want to grade students' attendance, edit the assignment settings. Check the box next to Do count this assignment towards the final grade. Be sure to save your changes. The assignment will be kept in the gradebook but will not be included in the total score. Students will see the attendance assignment in the grades list and can see a chart of their attendance record. The student grade page will also indicate that the assignment is not included in the total calculation.
What Students See
Please note instructors will not be able to view the student view of attendance. Depending on the settings you change in the assignment settings they can see the attendance assignment from grades and assignment list.
- If you choose the option to not include score in gradebook total, students will see a notification that states the assignment does not count toward the final grade.
- A chart will display that represents the days attended, days absent, and days marked late.
- Below the chart will be a list of the days students have been marked late or absent.
